Hi there and welcome to my blog! I thought this would be a good time to introduce myself to you.
My name is Daphne Chan and I’m a photographer. When I used to introduce myself using those words the tone would be similar to someone at AA meeting; like it was a confession or a declaration. Like it was something I was admitting to. For some reason, it took me a while to call myself a photographer. To claim the word. Even after I was getting paid to take photographs, I didn’t call myself a photographer. The word seemed to imply being both a professional and artist and, at the time, I wouldn’t claim to be either one.
Well now I can say it. And say it proudly. I’ve been a photographer for 10 years and there are still days I can’t believe I get to do what I love.
I got my start in Toronto where I opened my first studio photographing weddings and portraits. Then, like anyone with creative aspirations (and delusions), I moved to New York where I had a chance to explore fine art and commercial photography. Now I’m back in Canada, living on the West Coast in the beautiful city of Vancouver. Recently, I had the opportunity to relocate my office into an amazing studio at The Bay in downtown Vancouver (photos of the new studio here). The experiences I had in both New York and Toronto have obviously influenced my style and I’m looking forward to combining both worlds: photographing weddings and portraits with a fashion-forward and artistic viewpoint.
